What will you do on the programme?

On the Building Surveying Graduate Programme, you’ll help inspect and assess buildings to support the maintenance and improvement of infrastructure at HM Naval Base Clyde.

You’ll divide your time between site and office-based work, carrying out building condition surveys and producing reports that inform asset management and investment decisions across the estate. You’ll work closely with maintenance teams, project specialists and customers to help identify safety, compliance and lifecycle priorities.

You’ll also support refurbishment and capital projects, from carrying out snagging inspections on newly completed facilities to helping develop proposals for larger works such as roof replacements and building upgrades.

Working on a unique and complex defence estate, you’ll develop the technical knowledge, professional judgement and stakeholder management skills needed for a successful career in building surveying. And with a £250 million investment underway to modernise Clyde’s infrastructure, this is an exciting time to join us.

How is the programme structured?

This two-year programme is designed to develop your technical expertise, professional skills and understanding of the built environment through a blend of practical experience and supported learning.

You’ll work alongside experienced building surveyors and other engineering disciplines across a range of facilities, projects and stakeholders across the Clyde Estate. As your experience grows, you’ll take on increasing responsibility, building the confidence and capability needed to progress towards a professional career in building surveying.

How do we develop and support you?

From day one, you’ll receive structured support, tailored training, and dedicated mentorship to help you excel throughout your programme and beyond.

You’ll join our Graduate Development Programme, featuring expert-led masterclasses on communication, personal branding, resilience, and wellbeing.

You’ll also complete industry-recognised health and safety training, including Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Asbestos Awareness, Fire Safety, IOSH Working Safely and training on Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.

We’ll support your journey towards becoming a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB), funding professional membership, providing a mentor and offering study leave.

Development and support

What’s waiting for you after the programme?

When you complete the programme, you’ll move into a permanent role within our Surveying function, where you can continue applying and expanding the skills you’ve developed. You’ll also receive ongoing support to progress towards professional chartership, helping you build your professional competence and progress into more advanced roles.

From there, your development doesn’t stop. We’ll support you as you grow into more senior roles and take on greater responsibility. Through the Babcock Role Framework, you’ll have a clear view of how your career can progress, with mapped-out pathways, development opportunities and the tools you need to get wherever you want to go.

What rewards and benefits will you get?

We want you to feel supported, valued and excited about what’s ahead. That’s why we offer a comprehensive package designed to support your development, your wellbeing and your life outside of work too.

Rewards and benefits

What do you need to apply?

  • You’ll need to have achieved, or be on track to achieve, bachelor’s or master’s degree in Building Surveying.
  • You’ll need a full UK driving licence and be comfortable working at height and in confined spaces.
  • Many of our programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

Where will you be based?

Our Building Surveying Graduate Programme for September 2027 is based at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland.

We offer agile working, giving you some flexibility, but you can expect to spend several days a week on-site as part of your role and development. The balance between on-site and remote working will vary depending on the needs of specific projects, with some weeks requiring more time on-site than others.

Once you’ve successfully completed the programme, you’ll continue your career in the same location, so it’s worth considering this when applying.

Babcock’s HM Naval Base Clyde operation provides highly specialist engineering support services, including the management of critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities. We also deliver operational maintenance, upgrades and repairs to support Royal Navy vessels, including the Vanguard and Astute-class submarines based in Scotland.

As a Building Surveying Graduate, the survey work you do will support maintenance and improvements to the buildings and infrastructure that support these critical operations, gaining experience across asset management, refurbishment and capital projects within a unique and highly regulated environment.
