Pre-Apprenticeships

Not quite ready to start an apprenticeship? Our pre-apprenticeship programmes are designed to help you get there.

Working alongside local colleges, councils and training providers, we support individuals who have the enthusiasm and potential to build a career in engineering trades but may not yet have the qualifications or experience needed for a formal apprenticeship.
During the programme, you’ll develop:

  • Technical and practical skills
  • Workplace knowledge
  • Confidence and employability skills
  • An understanding of engineering careers

Successful participants may have the opportunity to progress into a full Babcock apprenticeship, giving them a clear route into a long-term career.

If you have the drive to learn and succeed, we’ll help you take the next step. This programme is available at Plymouth, Rosyth and HMNB Clyde, and selection of candidates is done in collaboration with our partners City College Plymouth, Fife College and West College Scotland. Speak to your tutor to find out if you’re eligible.

Production Support / Multi Skilled Operatives

If you’re interested in engineering but don’t have a traditional engineering background, our Production Support Operative roles (known as Multi Skilled Operatives on some sites) provide an accessible route into the industry at Rosyth, HMNB Clyde and Plymouth.

These roles play a vital part in supporting our manufacturing and production teams, carrying out important work that keeps projects moving while developing valuable technical skills.
As a Production Support Operative, you’ll:

  • Learn practical skills in a real working environment
  • Receive targeted training and support
  • Work alongside experienced engineering professionals
  • Gain exposure to major defence and engineering programmes
  • Develop skills that can open up future career opportunities

This pathway creates opportunities for people who may not have considered engineering before, helping them gain experience and build a career within a world-leading organisation.

PSO and MSO roles have no set recruitment timetable and are recruited on a needs-basis, so we suggest setting up a job alert for them by clicking below.
