Health Physics at Babcock

Health Physics is the science of protecting people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation. They work in highly regulated nuclear environments, helping ensure activities involving radiological hazards are planned, controlled and completed safely.

Their expertise supports everything from submarine maintenance and reactor defuelling activities to radioactive waste management, environmental monitoring and submarine decommissioning programmes.

In simple terms, they help make sure complex nuclear work can happen safely and responsibly so that exposure levels are as low as reasonably practical.

No two careers in Health Physics are exactly the same.

Across our sites, Health Physics teams support a wide range of activities and specialisms, including:

  • Radiation protection and monitoring
  • Radiation risk assessment
  • Radioactive waste management
  • Environmental protection and monitoring
  • Dosimetry
  • Nuclear assurance
  • Emergency preparedness and response
  • Training and development
  • Regulatory compliance and technical advisory services

Some roles involve working directly alongside engineers, maintenance teams and operational personnel in radiological environments. Others focus on providing technical advice, assessing complex hazards, managing radiation protection programmes or supporting future nuclear capability.

Whatever the specialism, every role contributes to protecting people while enabling important work to go ahead safely and effectively.
