What we do

Creating a safe and secure world

Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep a country safe, deliver nuclear energy, or support public services? At Babcock we do all that – and more.

We’re not just an engineering company; we’re a team of over 29,000 people working together to solve some of the world’s most important challenges. From maintaining frigates and submarines for the Royal Navy, supporting the training of emergency services, or developing low-carbon energy solutions, our work touches many aspects of everyday life.

We’re known for our expertise in engineering, technology, and project management – and we’re trusted to deliver complex, high-stakes projects that help protect people and communities. With a strong focus on teamwork, problem solving and real-world impact, we continue to shape the future of defence and engineering in the UK and beyond.

Babcock at a glance

Lifetime engineering

At Babcock, everything starts with lifetime engineering — our commitment to support critical assets from design through to build, maintenance, upgrades and, eventually, retirement. It’s an approach built for long‑term reliability and mission success, shaping how we work and the opportunities we offer.

To deliver this, we focus on two core areas: through‑life technical support and design & manufacture.

  1. Through‑life technical support. We keep the UK’s most important assets — including naval vessels, submarines, vehicles and nuclear systems — safe, available and capable throughout their entire operational life. That includes engineering maintenance, refits, upgrades, digital insight, specialist training and full asset management, ensuring these systems perform reliably for decades. This long‑game mindset creates opportunities for people at every level: from apprentices learning practical skills, to engineers applying data and diagnostics, to trainers supporting frontline personnel. Every role contributes directly to keeping vital national capabilities running.
  2. Design & manufacture, Alongside supporting existing assets, we also design and build new ones — including specialist naval systems, weapons‑handling equipment and advanced liquid‑gas handling technologies used across defence and civil operations. On programmes like the Type 31 frigate, our teams use modular, adaptable design and cutting‑edge facilities to develop modern, export‑ready platforms built for evolving defence needs. It’s hands‑on engineering that shapes national capability for generations.

Our principles

The above is the ‘what’ of what we do then our principles are the ‘how’. They put people at the core of everything we do; they guide how we all work together and create the foundation for how we behave as individuals and as a team.

They keep us on the right course for achieving our vision of a safe, strong, sustainable Babcock, unifying the way we work. No matter your role in the business or location around the world, from the front-line to the Board, we’re all on the same page and working together in the same way.
