Project Management Graduate Programme
Location: Rosyth
Sector/Business unit: Group
My graduate programme, why I chose it and why I chose Babcock:
The Project Management Graduate Programme at Babcock appealed to me for several reasons. As a Human Geography graduate, I was open to exploring different career paths and was drawn to project management because of the variety of opportunities it offered. The programme stood out because it welcomed graduates from a wide range of academic backgrounds and focused on transferable skills such as organisation, communication and problem-solving, rather than requiring prior project management experience.
Through both my degree and part-time work in the catering industry, I developed many of these skills and saw the programme as an opportunity to apply them in a professional environment. Babcock also offered the chance to work at the forefront of engineering and defence, supporting projects that have a real impact both in the UK and internationally. My studies gave me an understanding of topics such as geopolitics, conflict and international relations, which helped me appreciate the wider context of the work carried out across the business.
Another aspect that attracted me to the programme was the opportunity to rotate across different sectors through six-month placements. The chance to gain experience in a variety of roles and environments was incredibly appealing. Combined with flexible working arrangements, the BIG Benefits scheme and the strong focus on professional development, Babcock felt like an excellent place to start my career.
My favourite part of the programme:
The rotational structure of the programme has given me the opportunity to live and work in different parts of the UK while building experience across a range of projects. I started my graduate journey in Bristol within Mission Systems and am now based in Rosyth within the Marine sector.
Experiencing different working environments has been particularly rewarding. Rosyth’s dockyard setting is very different from the office-based environment in Bristol, and each placement has provided unique opportunities to learn, meet new teams and experience new locations. This variety has kept the programme engaging and has broadened my understanding of how different parts of the business operate.
The support provided throughout each move has also made a real difference. The Emerging Talent team has been excellent in helping with the relocation process, while placement managers have provided valuable support during each induction period and beyond.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of the highlights of my programme so far has been my time within Mission Systems in Bristol. This project gave me the opportunity to work closely with an external supplier on a weekly basis, while also developing key skills such as stakeholder management, communication and leadership.
Starting my graduate journey on this project gave me a solid foundation in many of the core skills that Project Managers need. It also gave me the confidence to take ownership of different areas of work and contribute to the project from an early stage.
My support network on the project was also incredible. I was lucky enough to work with two colleagues who had previously completed Babcock’s Project Management Graduate Programme themselves. This meant that whenever I had a question about the project, the graduate scheme or Babcock more generally, there was always someone I could turn to for advice. Having that support helped me settle into the role quickly and make the most of the opportunities available to me
My work-life balance:
One thing I really value is the flexibility Babcock offers, which helps me manage both my work and personal commitments. This means that if my car is in the garage, I have an appointment, or I want to fit in some exercise before work, I can adjust my day accordingly while still meeting the requirements of my role. I also have the option to work from home or in the office, depending on what is most suitable.
Through the Graduate Development Programme, we are actively encouraged to maintain a healthy work-life balance. This can be through simple things such as going for a walk at lunchtime, taking regular breaks, or choosing to have an in-person meeting instead of an online call where possible.
There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved outside of work. From badminton and climbing clubs to graduate social events, there is something for everyone. These activities are a great way to meet new people, stay active, and build connections across the business.
My development:
I have been supported by a wide range of people throughout my time on the programme. I have a placement manager who provides day-to-day guidance, a buddy from the year above who can share their experiences of the scheme, and a mentor who supports my professional development both during the programme and as I plan for the future.
I have also built a strong network through employee networks, social events and my placements. These connections have been invaluable, providing support, advice and a real sense of belonging within the business.
In addition, the Emerging Talent team organises professional development sessions delivered by external specialists. These sessions cover a variety of topics and provide valuable opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence and prepare for the transition into a substantive role. Together, these experiences have helped me grow both professionally and personally during my time on the programme.
