My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose to start an apprenticeship to prove that, even later in life, it is possible to learn new skills and pursue a completely different career. After spending more than 30 years in retail management, I wanted to challenge myself and take on something new.
I also wanted to set an example for my son and show him that if there is something you want to change in life, you should go for it and give it a chance.
My favourite part of the programme:
Working on the wide range of vessels that come through Devonport Royal Dockyard has been a real highlight of the programme. I particularly enjoy the hands-on nature of the role, whether that involves carrying out repairs or making the modifications needed to complete a task.
I take pride in knowing that the work we do helps maintain and support critical MOD vessels and equipment, ensuring they remain safe, capable, and ready to meet operational requirements.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Playing a part in the repair and renewal of HMS Kent has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my apprenticeship so far.
I have also had the opportunity to carry out oxy-acetylene burning work on submarines, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is not something I ever imagined I would be doing, and it has been incredibly rewarding to learn and develop those skills.
My work-life balance:
I find the work-life balance at Babcock to be very good, especially compared to my previous roles. My working hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm during the week, with an early finish at 12:30pm on Fridays.
This gives me much more time to spend with my family and allows for a healthy balance between my work and home life.
