My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
When I left school, I knew I wanted to work in engineering and was faced with two choices: university or an apprenticeship. After some consideration, I decided that an apprenticeship would be the best option for me due to the enjoyment I get from working with my hands, as well as the opportunity to earn while I learn.
My interest in engineering has always leaned towards warships, as my younger years were heavily influenced by the Royal Navy. Because of this, working for Babcock made perfect sense. It gave me the opportunity to pursue a career in an industry I was passionate about while developing valuable skills and experience.
My favourite part of the programme:
The variety of placements across Devonport was one of the best parts of my apprenticeship. From working in workshops on motors and weapons systems to getting stuck into refits and ultimately helping to deliver warships back to our customer, every placement offered something different.
Alongside this, I was able to complete my college work while learning from the skilled workforce that makes it all happen. The combination of practical experience, formal education, and support from experienced colleagues made the programme incredibly rewarding.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Helping to upgrade a radar system and install a new weapon system on a Royal Navy ship during a refit was an incredibly rewarding experience.
The project involved installing miles of cable and cable routes throughout the ship, before rebuilding compartments and making the final connections. Seeing the ship sail again, watching the radar turning, and knowing that the weapon system I had a hand in installing was fully operational gave me a real sense of pride. It’s a great feeling knowing that the work you’ve done helps keep our Royal Navy safe.
My work-life balance:
The working hours in Devonport fit well around my lifestyle, allowing me to spend more of my evenings with my family.
There are also opportunities to work shifts in some areas, which can provide greater flexibility and allow me to make the most of the day before heading to work.
My development:
Babcock has always supported my personal and professional development, ensuring I stay up to date with the latest practices within my field. Since completing my apprenticeship, I have had the opportunity to undertake a variety of courses that have helped me expand my knowledge and skills. These ongoing development opportunities continue to support my career progression and enable me to grow within the business.
