My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose a Project Management Degree Apprenticeship because it gives me the best of both worlds – I can learn the theory while applying it in a real job. I didn’t just want to sit in a classroom; I wanted something more hands-on where I could build practical skills and see the impact of what I’m doing. Project management stood out to me because it’s really varied – you’re organising, solving problems, working with different people, and no two days are ever the same. I like the idea of being involved in projects that make a real difference and being able to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership as I go.
I chose Babcock because of the type of work they do and the impact it has. It’s a company that is involved in large, meaningful projects, especially in areas such as engineering and defence, which really interested me. I also liked how much they invest in their apprentices – it feels like a place where you are supported but also trusted with real responsibility early on. The variety of work and the chance to constantly learn and take on new challenges really stood out to me. Overall, it felt like a great fit for me and the kind of career I wanted to build.
My favourite part of the programme:
The variety of opportunities available throughout my apprenticeship has been one of the best parts of the programme. I’ve had the chance to do so much more than just my day-to-day role. I’ve attended events such as the APM (Association for Project Management) Conference, taken part in STEM activities, and got involved in volunteering, which has been really rewarding.
I’ve also had the opportunity to meet senior leaders within the defence sector, which has been really interesting and inspiring. One of the highlights has been getting first-hand experience of what we actually produce and seeing the real impact of our work. I’ve also pushed myself outside my comfort zone by speaking in front of large groups, which has really helped build my confidence.
Another big part that I’ve enjoyed is the number of people I get to meet. Because I’m an apprentice, I’ve been able to work across different teams and connect with lots of new people, which has helped me learn and grow both personally and professionally.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Taking ownership of a subsystem on a submarine programme was a significant milestone for me. It was the first time I’d been given that level of responsibility, making it both challenging and exciting.
Being responsible for a specific part of such a complex project pushed me to step up and apply everything I’d been learning. I had to stay organised, communicate with different teams, and make sure everything was progressing as it should. It was a big step up from what I’d done before, but it really helped build my confidence and showed me what I’m capable of.
My work-life balance:
Balancing my apprenticeship, studies, and personal life has been much more manageable thanks to the support and flexibility available at Babcock. There are lots of different networks and support systems in place, so you always feel like there’s someone you can go to if you need help or advice. Being part of these networks also helps you connect with others across the business, which is really valuable.
The flexibility is another big positive. With flexi-time, I’m able to manage my working hours in a way that fits around both my job and my studies, which really helps reduce stress and keeps things balanced. On top of that, having a good amount of annual leave means I can properly switch off and recharge when I need to.
My development:
I feel really well supported in my development at Babcock. Having a dedicated university day each week is a big help, as it gives me the time to focus on my studies alongside my job without feeling overwhelmed. It makes it much easier to stay on top of both and get the most out of the apprenticeship.
There are also plenty of opportunities to gain additional qualifications and access learning platforms, which means I can keep building my knowledge and developing new skills all the time. On top of that, there are always extra opportunities to get involved in different projects, events, and initiatives, which helps me learn beyond my day-to-day role.
One of the things I’ve found most valuable is the support from the people around me. Senior colleagues are always willing to help, share their experiences, and offer advice, which has really helped me grow in confidence and develop my understanding of the industry. It creates a really positive environment where you feel supported to keep improving.
