Project Management Graduate Programme
Location: Bristol
Sector/Business unit: Group
My graduate programme, why I chose it and why I chose Babcock:
When I started applying for graduate schemes in my final year at university, I knew I wanted a role where I could see how my work contributed to something bigger. The chance to work on projects that support national security and critical infrastructure really appealed to me, as it felt like work that genuinely mattered.
The structure of the Project Management graduate programme was another big draw. I liked the idea of rotating around different parts of the business and experiencing a range of projects, teams and ways of working before deciding which area was the best fit for me. Being able to gain recognised project management qualifications alongside practical experience also made it an attractive place to start my career.
Having studied Business Management and completed a Year in Industry placement, I was keen to find a career where I could build on the knowledge and experience I’d already gained. Project management felt like a natural fit, as it allowed me to apply what I’d learned about areas such as business operations, planning, and stakeholder management in a practical environment.
My favourite part of the programme:
What I’ve enjoyed most about the programme is the opportunity to experience different sectors, project lifecycle stages and locations. Whilst I have been based in Bristol for my first two rotations, I have experienced two very different sectors and projects within Cavendish Nuclear and Naval Nuclear. Both have been at different lifecycle stages and have required completely different approaches, broadening my understanding of how the organisation operates and how different sectors tackle equally complex challenges.
This variety keeps my role engaging and allows me to build a broad portfolio of skills, ranging from technical planning tools and project controls to stakeholder management and leadership. It has also helped me identify my strengths, development areas, and interests within project management and the wider business.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Working on a complex new-build programme within Cavendish Nuclear has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my graduate programme. Through this project, I developed a broad range of project management competencies, including lifecycle governance, planning and project strategy.
It gave me a strong understanding of the requirements associated with the early phases of the project lifecycle, as well as the strategic decisions involved and how they align with wider Cavendish Nuclear and Babcock objectives.
Although projects of this scale can span several years, it is still possible to make a meaningful impact in a relatively short period. By supporting planning activities, stakeholder coordination and milestone management, I contributed to the successful progression of the project. Seeing how my work fitted into the wider team effort, and understanding how it supported a much larger outcome, was extremely rewarding.
My work-life balance:
Babcock places a strong emphasis on supporting wellbeing and maintaining a healthy work-life balance across the graduate programme. One way this is achieved is through flexible working arrangements, including flexibility around start and finish times and, where appropriate, a mix of office- and home-based working.
Personally, I prefer to work in the office more than at home, as I find it easier to ask questions, receive feedback and integrate with my wider team and graduate network. However, having the option to work from home and flexibility over my working hours means I can attend appointments or manage personal commitments without the stress of a rigid schedule.
Through our employee networks, I have also been able to meet apprentices and graduates from across the business, building a great group of friends with whom I regularly go bouldering and play football. The networks organise a variety of social activities, including outdoor events, hikes and pub quizzes, helping to create a strong sense of community outside of work.
My development:
I have felt well supported throughout my time on the graduate programme at Babcock. A couple of weeks before starting, I was introduced by email to my future line manager and mentor, which meant I already had points of contact and could begin building relationships and asking questions before joining the business.
Since joining Babcock, I have been primarily supported through three channels: my line manager, mentor and buddy. My line manager supports my day-to-day development through the setting of SMART objectives, while my mentor, who remains consistent throughout the two-year programme, provides guidance on longer-term career and development goals. In addition, my buddy, a graduate in the year above me, offers practical advice and support based on their own experience of the scheme.
The Emerging Talent team has also played a key role in my development, organising externally delivered sessions covering topics such as mental and physical wellbeing, building resilience and communicating effectively. Overall, I have found Babcock to provide a holistic support structure that supports both professional and personal development in the short and long term.
