Mechanical Engineering Apprentice – Accelerated Apprenticeship
Location: Warrington
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose this apprenticeship because I wanted to gain first-hand experience of the professional mechanical engineering environment and expand my knowledge beyond the classroom. I am keen to learn how engineers collaborate, plan projects, and solve problems on a daily basis. I believe this opportunity will help me improve my organisation and analytical skills, while giving me a better understanding of how the industry works.
I chose Babcock because it offers the opportunity to apply and develop these skills within a professional and well-established engineering organisation. Babcock’s work in supporting essential services and complex systems really appeals to me, and I believe this apprenticeship will help me build my confidence and gain a deeper understanding of mechanical engineering in a real workplace.
My favourite part of the programme:
Taking part in STEM outreach gives me the opportunity to inspire the next generation of engineers. Being able to share my experiences and encourage others to consider careers in engineering has been both enjoyable and meaningful. I especially enjoy helping younger students understand the opportunities available and showing them that engineering can be exciting and accessible.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Supporting other apprentices and graduates with their IEng applications, apprenticeships, and graduate schemes has been incredibly fulfilling. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experiences to help others navigate their development journeys. Seeing their confidence grow and knowing that I’ve contributed to their progress is really satisfying. It has also helped me develop my communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
My work-life balance:
Babcock supports my work-life balance through flexible working arrangements, allowing me to work from home a few days a week. This reduces my commuting time and gives me greater flexibility in my working day.
My development:
I have opportunities to work on challenging projects and take on meaningful responsibilities. This encourages me to step outside of my comfort zone and develop both my technical and professional skills. It has also given me the opportunity to work with people across different teams, helping me l build confidence in my abilities, and develop as an engineer.
The guidance and support of experienced colleagues has been invaluable, allowing me to learn from their knowledge and apply it to my own work. Overall, these experiences have played a key role in my growth and progression throughout my apprenticeship.
