My graduate programme, why I chose it and why I chose Babcock:
I’m currently in my first year of the Project Management Graduate Programme at Babcock. I chose this pathway and Babcock because I wanted to work somewhere where what I do has a broader purpose that I can believe in. I wanted to contribute to projects that have a real-world impact and help protect the UK.
Babcock offers the opportunity to be involved in delivering tangible outcomes and to see first-hand the development of complex and fascinating engineering projects. Through my role, I’ve visited some incredible sites and met many inspiring and knowledgeable people.
Project Management appealed to me because it offers a unique perspective, allowing you to see the entire lifecycle of a project rather than just one isolated section. It provides insight not only into the technical aspects of a project but also into how different teams and functions must work together to achieve a common goal. A career in project management allows you to see the bigger picture, providing a greater understanding of the strategic direction of programmes and how individual pieces of work contribute to their overall success.
My favourite part of the programme:
Experiencing cutting-edge technology up close has been one of the most memorable aspects of the programme so far. During my time at Hinkley Point C, I had the chance to explore the reactor building and see the sheer scale of the construction work up close. One particularly memorable moment was looking down into the central void where the pressure vessel will be installed, which really brought home the size and complexity of the project.
What made the experience even more valuable was being accompanied by an expert who could explain the science behind what I was seeing.
Moments like this have been a highlight of the programme, giving me a real appreciation of the scale and complexity of the projects I contribute to.
My most rewarding project/experience:
One of my most rewarding experiences so far was during my time at Hinkley Point C, where I was responsible for coordinating the installation of several pressure-relieving compensators within the main building. It was a complex and challenging piece of work that required careful planning, coordination, and management of both people and resources to ensure everything was delivered safely and on schedule. Seeing the installation completed successfully was a real highlight and gave me a strong sense of achievement, as well as a greater appreciation for the impact that effective project management can have on major infrastructure projects.
Another particularly rewarding experience was volunteering as part of a Project Management initiative supporting a local charity. Our team worked with Young Bristol, a youth development organisation supporting vulnerable young people, to design and deliver an Engineering Engagement Day, alongside a framework that would enable the programme to continue in the future. Knowing that our work could have a lasting positive impact and help inspire young people to explore opportunities in engineering and at Babcock made the experience especially meaningful.
My work-life balance:
Babcock offers a good level of flexibility that helps me balance work and personal commitments. Depending on the project and role requirements, graduates may have the option to work slightly longer hours from Monday to Thursday in order to finish earlier on a Friday. I find that this arrangement works well for me, as it provides additional time at the end of the week to relax, socialise, or focus on personal commitments.
There is also flexibility in how working hours are managed, provided project and business needs are met. Different colleagues use this flexibility in different ways; some adjust their schedules around family commitments, while others make time for activities such as exercise or appointments. In my experience, managers and colleagues are supportive of maintaining a healthy balance between work and life outside of work, which contributes to a positive working environment.
My development:
Babcock has provided strong support for my development throughout my placements. At the start of each placement, my managers work with me to set development objectives that align with the core project management competencies we are building throughout the programme, as well as my own long-term development goals.
I’ve also been assigned both a buddy and a mentor, which has been invaluable in helping me settle into the programme. My buddy, Ffion, is a graduate one year ahead of me and has been a great source of guidance for the day-to-day questions that come with starting a new role. Alongside this, my mentor, a more senior colleague, provides broader career advice and insight into the business, helping me think longer term about my development, where I might focus my efforts, and the people I should connect with to achieve my goals.
