My apprenticeship, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose a Project Controls Degree Apprenticeship because I liked the idea of gaining practical experience alongside studying for my degree. Being able to apply what I learn at university directly to my role has really helped me develop my understanding much faster and made the learning feel more relevant and engaging.
What particularly attracted me to project controls was the variety within the role. I’ve had the opportunity to gain experience across cost, risk, and planning, which has given me a well-rounded view of how large, complex projects are managed. Each placement has introduced me to different teams and environments, helping me build confidence and adapt to new challenges.
I chose Babcock because of the scale and impact of the work, as well as the clear investment in early careers. It stood out to me as a place where I would be supported to develop while contributing to meaningful projects. Since starting, I’ve found that to be true, as I’ve been trusted with real responsibilities and encouraged to get involved in a wide range of project work.
Overall, the programme offers a great balance between learning and hands-on experience, making it an ideal pathway to start my career.
My favourite part of the programme:
The chance to work across different project controls disciplines has been one of the best parts of the programme. Working in areas such as cost, risk, and planning has helped me understand how each discipline contributes to successful project delivery.
I’ve also really enjoyed working with different teams, as each one brings new ways of working and different challenges to learn from. This has helped me develop both technically and professionally, particularly in areas such as communication and problem-solving.
Another highlight has been the level of responsibility I’ve been given. I’ve been trusted to work independently on tasks, which has helped build my confidence and allowed me to take ownership of my work while still having support when I need it.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Getting involved in live projects has given me the opportunity to see how my work contributes to the bigger picture. Through activities such as cost tracking and planning, I’ve developed a strong understanding of how project controls support effective decision-making and drive successful project delivery.
Taking ownership of tasks and contributing to the wider team has helped me build confidence and develop my skills in different project environments.
Looking back, I’m proud of how much I’ve progressed since starting the programme. Moving from learning the fundamentals of project controls to making meaningful contributions to live projects has given me a real sense of achievement and growth.
My work-life balance:
Balancing work and university commitments has been made much easier by the support and flexibility available throughout my apprenticeship. My line manager and project teams are understanding of the demands of studying while working, which makes a big difference.
If needed, I’m given flexibility and, at times, extra time during working hours to focus on my university work, which helps reduce pressure around deadlines. This support allows me to stay on top of both my academic and professional responsibilities.
At the same time, I’m still given a variety of meaningful project work and trusted to complete tasks independently. This balance means I’m able to develop professionally without feeling overwhelmed, creating a positive and supportive working environment.
My development:
The range of opportunities available throughout my apprenticeship has played a key role in my development. Through day-to-day project work and the wider apprenticeship structure, I’ve been able to build technical skills and gain confidence across different areas of project controls.
My line manager and wider team are approachable and always willing to offer guidance when needed, but I’m also trusted to work independently. This has been important in helping me develop confidence and take ownership of my work.
Having exposure to different teams and placements has also supported my development, as I’ve been able to learn from a variety of people and working styles. Combined with my university studies, this has created a strong foundation for my future career and helped me continuously improve.
