Civil and Structural Engineering Graduate Programme
Location: Bristol
Sector/Business unit: Nuclear
My graduate programme, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:
I chose this programme because it offered the opportunity to gain diverse experience across civil and structural engineering, while working on projects that have a real impact. The rotational structure particularly stood out to me, as it allows me to develop a broad skill set by working across different teams, disciplines, and project stages. This variety was important early in my career, as I felt it would help me build a well-rounded understanding of the industry while identifying the areas I am most interested in pursuing long-term.
I was especially drawn to the opportunity to work on complex, high-profile infrastructure projects within the defence and energy sectors. Being able to contribute to projects such as nuclear facilities and infrastructure adds a strong sense of purpose to the work, as these are critical to the UK’s safety, security, and future.
I chose Babcock because of its strong commitment to development and progression. The structured graduate programme, combined with mentorship and support towards professional registration, aligns closely with my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer. Additionally, the clear career pathways and long-term opportunities within the organisation give me confidence that I can continue to grow and develop within the company.
My favourite part of the programme:
The variety of placements has been one of the highlights of the programme for me. It has allowed me to explore a broad range of experiences early in my career and gain insight into different aspects of engineering. So far, I’ve worked on design-focused placements, where I developed my technical skills and gained an understanding of the design process, as well as placements focused on lifecycle carbon assessment, which introduced me to the environmental and sustainability aspects of engineering.
This variety has been particularly valuable in helping me understand the breadth and depth of projects delivered across the company, and how different engineering disciplines connect and influence one another. It has also enabled me to identify my strengths and interests, while continuing to challenge myself in unfamiliar areas. By stepping into different roles, I’ve gained a more holistic view of projects, from initial design through to long-term impact and performance.
Overall, this flexibility has accelerated my learning and development, allowing me to build a well-rounded skill set. It has also helped me become more adaptable and confident in approaching new challenges, which I believe is essential for becoming a good engineer.
My most rewarding project/experience:
Working on the Submarine Dismantling Project has been my most rewarding experience so far, as it gave me the opportunity to take ownership of a package of work straight out of university.
The prospect of designing a structure independently, while working within a set of project constraints, was initially quite daunting. However, I had plenty of support from my placement manager and the wider team whenever I needed it. I managed to get so much exposure to real-life design work early on, and I’ve never felt prouder of myself than when I finally delivered the package of work.
The project also allowed me to visit the site, where I was able to contextualise my work and see how my contributions translated into real-world outcomes, making it an especially rewarding experience.
My work-life balance:
Babcock provides a good level of flexibility that helps me balance my work and personal commitments. I’m an early riser and have found that I’m most productive in the morning, so I tend to start work earlier and make the most of those focused hours. This allows me to complete key tasks efficiently and maintain a strong level of productivity without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Having this flexibility means I can better manage personal commitments and make time for activities that support my wellbeing, whether that’s exercise, socialising, or simply switching off after work. The ability to structure my day in a way that suits how I work best has had a significantly positive impact on both my performance and overall job satisfaction.
As a result, I feel more balanced and motivated, which helps me perform at my best while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
My development:
During my time at Babcock, I have been part of the internal training scheme for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) while working towards chartership. This has provided me with both the time and structured support needed to focus on my professional development and progression towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. My mentor has played a key role in this journey, helping me to effectively evidence my experience and guiding me in seeking out placements that broaden my exposure to different areas of civil engineering.
In addition, I have taken part in the graduate development scheme, which has helped me build essential skills such as communication, confidence, and developing my personal brand. These sessions have been highly valuable, not only in enhancing my professional capabilities but also in supporting my personal growth. Overall, these opportunities have significantly contributed to my development, enabling me to become a more well-rounded and capable engineer.
