My graduate programme, why I chose it, and why I chose Babcock:

I was particularly drawn to Babcock because of the chance to contribute to complex, nationally significant projects within the Civil Nuclear sector.

My placement has enabled me to develop my engineering knowledge while working to the highest safety standards on challenging and rewarding projects. What has stood out most is the opportunity to work alongside highly specialised teams and contribute to projects that play a vital role in supporting the UK’s nuclear infrastructure. Working in such a technically demanding environment has given me valuable insight into the complexity and importance of delivering safe, reliable and resilient engineering solutions.

Being involved in work of this scale and importance, while learning from experienced professionals, has been a fantastic way to start my career.

My favourite part of the programme:

As an Electrical Engineering Graduate, my favourite part of the programme has been learning about and seeing first-hand the advanced technologies that  support the nuclear industry. Working within a highly regulated and safety-critical environment has given me exposure to systems and processes that are unlike those found in many other engineering sectors, including nuclear-grade electrical equipment, safety-critical power systems, instrumentation and control technologies, glovebox design and safety systems, and innovative digital engineering tools.

The rotational nature of the programme has also allowed me to work closely with different engineering disciplines, giving me exposure to areas of engineering design that I had never encountered before. This has broadened my understanding of the industry and helped me develop a more well-rounded engineering perspective.

My most rewarding project/experience:

My most rewarding experience so far has been taking part in STEM outreach events, where I have delivered presentations to young people about the work that Babcock does and my role within the business.

Being able to answer their questions and share my experiences has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing young people become inspired by engineering and consider pursuing a similar career path has been a real highlight of my time on the programme.

My work-life balance: 

In my role at Babcock, flexible and hybrid working arrangements allow me to balance my professional and personal commitments effectively, including going to the gym and photography. This flexibility helps me manage my workload while ensuring I have time to pursue my hobbies and interests outside of work.

My development:

My managers actively support and encourage my professional development, providing guidance and advice whenever I need it. Their support has helped me maintain a clear direction throughout the graduate programme and given me the confidence to continue progressing in my career.

I have also completed a range of technical and professional development courses designed to support both my progression towards professional accreditation and my wider understanding of the nuclear industry. These include the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification, as well as Alpha & Gain training courses covering fissile materials, nuclear safety, and new nuclear technologies.

These opportunities have been both informative and motivating, allowing me to learn from experienced engineers, gain valuable industry knowledge and develop skills that will support my future career.
